New to Pickleball?
New players must know the basics of pickleball (skill rating of 2.0 or higher) before taking advantage of Friendly House’s drop-in pickleball hours. We recommend brand new players to attend one of Shannon’s “Joy Crazy Pickleball” classes through MeetUp.com which you can register for using the button below.
Overview
We began offering drop-in pickleball at Friendly House as an additional amenity of membership in 2022, to accommodate the increasing popularity of the game in the greater Portland area. We offer two indoor courts located in our gymnasium at the Friendly House Community Center (Crawford Building: 1737 NW 26th Ave). Although most players bring their own paddles, we can provide up to eight paddles if needed. We also provide indoor pickleballs, two nets, and two rotation paddle racks.
What is Pickleball?
Pickleball is described by USA Pickleball as:
- A fun sport that combines many elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong.
- Played both indoors or outdoors on a badminton-sized court and a slightly modified tennis net.
- Played with a paddle and a plastic ball with holes.
- Played as doubles or singles.
- Can be enjoyed by all ages and skill level.
What are the rules at Friendly House?
-
All players must sign up on Playtimescheduler.com
-
Four Players can play in each court (doubles).
-
When a game reaches a score of 7 or 11, all players must exit the court to allow others to play.
-
Please refrain from playing the ball against the wall during others’ games.
-
Once play has started for a scheduled drop-in, waitlist notifications from playtime scheduler are no longer accurate because we staff will feed players into the queue 10 mins after play has started on a first come, first serve basis. If you signed up and can no longer make it, please remove your name from the schedule.
Player Rotation
Player rotation is determined by the sign-up list on Playtimescheduler.com. Every player must register online to reserve a spot. The dates are posted two weeks ahead of time. A total of 16 players are allowed on the court at a time in teams of two for doubles. If the registration is full, a waitlist of four will form.
In the spirit of fair play and sportsmanship, we are kindly asking that pickleball players sign up for one drop-in a day, if two sessions are available. We thank you for your patience as we adapt to new approaches in rules and practices to ensure access to recreation for all our community members.
Day of Event: Drop-In Pickleball
Please check-in at the front desk when you arrive. You will sign in by your name on the daily printout of the playtime scheduler registration to help us regulate the waitlist. A note that players sometime drop out at the last minute, and we do our best to print out the schedule as close to the time of play as possible, given the availability of staff. If your plans change, please make sure you unenroll from the day that you signed up to allow someone else to play.
Waitlisted players will be fed into the play queue after 10 minutes if registered players don’t show up. We ask that all waitlisted players please wait outside the gym due to crowding and again, in the spirit of fair play and respect to your fellow community members.
We do not supervise play with staff or have a referee. As a community center, we offer drop-in basketball, pickleball as well as open gym as a resource to the community for groups to self-organize.
We kindly ask that players follow the rules of play that Friendly House has set, even if other courts have different rules, or if personal preferences differ. The rules that we selected are in line with the mission of Friendly House and aim to provide all players with an equal opportunity to play. We remind everyone who accesses the space at Friendly House, whether you are a member or not, that there are rules and regulations to observe when using any service at Friendly House, and that we reserve the right to ask anyone to leave at any time, and for any reason.
