Summer Break Camp

1st–6th Grade Camp: 9am–4pm. Optional before care (7–9am) and aftercare (4–6pm) are each available at an additional cost.

Session 1 (June 21–24):
Order Up
Four Days of Culinary Exploration

 If you love to experiment with different flavors and wish to learn how to cook delicious, allergy-friendly food, then this camp is for you! From kitchen to table, you’ll learn how to follow a recipe and create an array of culinary masterpieces. Each dish you create will become a page in your very own cookbook. Best of all, you’ll get to eat what you make!

Four-Day Week Cost: $240

Session 2 (June 27–July 1st):
Science Rocks
Interactive Learning and a Trip to OMSI

It’s science week! You’ll begin the week with an inspiring trip to OMSI, and on the days following you’ll learn dazzling and fascinating scientific facts about the world we live in and the universe beyond. Prepare to have your mind blown with daily science experiments. You’ll even learn how to power a light bulb with a potato!

Session 3 (July 5–July 8):
What a Beautiful World
Four Days of Nature, from Garden to Forest

Get your hands dirty this week and make some new friends: the wiggly, wriggly kind! You’ll learn all about the miracles of nature that are all around us, how to garden naturally, and even how to compost with worms. You’ll also create your own herb or flowerpots to take home. Finally, enjoy a Friday adventure to Forest Park and witness the beauty of nature for yourself!

Four-Day Week Cost: $240

Session 4 (July 11–15)
Defend the Fort
Castle Building and a Venture to Fort Vancouver

You’re never too old to experience the joy of fort building! Learn all about forts, castles, and other fortified structures built throughout history by cultures from around the world. Participate in fort building games, competitions, and crafts. Build your own model fort throughout the week to take home as a souvenir. You’ll also venture across the Columbia to Fort Vancouver to experience a fort—and life in a fort—firsthand.

Session 5 (July 18–22):
Lava Lovers
Build Your Own Volcano, Plus a Trip to Ape Caves

Learn all about volcanoes: the science, the history, and the indigenous stories they inspired! As a souvenir, you’ll create your own mini erupting volcano to take home. You’ll also venture into the breathtaking Pacific Northwest wilderness for a hiking trip to Mount St. Helens and an epic exploration of the Ape Caves!

Session 6 (July 25–29):
Wonderland
Shadow Puppets, Games, and a Trip to Wunderland Arcade

Follow us down the rabbit hole for a whimsical week inspired by the book “Alice in Wonderland”. You’ll create shadow puppets for a camp-wide video production of “The Jabberwocky”, concoct your own special herbal tea blend with the Mad Hatter at teatime, and play a non-stop variety of whacky games. On Friday, you’ll emerge from Wonderland only to find yourself at the Wunderland Arcade on Belmont!

Session 7 (Aug. 1–5):
Animal Theatre
Field Trip to the Zoo and a Truly Wild Performance

Feel like roaring? Howling? Growling? Now’s your chance! Create your own animal mask and be part of a camp-wide theatrical production. You’ll be cast in the show on Monday and take a trip to the Oregon Zoo on Tuesday to observe how animals look, sound, and move. The rest of our week will be spent creating your mask, writing your lines, and rehearsing. Finally, on Friday afternoon you’ll “trod the boards” and perform for a live audience!

Session 8 (Aug. 8–12):
Fairytale & Enchantment
Imagination, Creativity, and a trip to the Enchanted Forest

From gathering twigs and other natural items to build your own fairy house, to creating your own mythical beast with paper mâché, this week promises to be full of magic and imagination. On Friday, venture to the Enchanted Forest and experience the joy of story firsthand!

Session 9 (Aug. 15–19):
Ahoy, Me Hearties!
Field Trip to the Oregon Coast, plus Kite Making, Sea Chanteys & More

Avast ye, scallywags! Its time to climb aboard and hoist your main sail! Aye, from its fascinating sea dwelling beasts, to its long history and its timeless lore, you’ll be learning more about the sea than any landlubber ever dreamed possible. While on dry land at Friendly House, you’ll be learning sea chanteys, kite making, shell creations, and a good deal more. Finally, our crew will take you on a Friday trip to the Oregon coast where you’ll enjoy kite flying, building sand castles, and exploring the shore with your fellow buccaneers!

Don’t miss our fun, engaging camps for kids heading into 1st–6th grade! We have new themes each session, hands-on learning, fun projects and cool field trips, from Ape Caves, to OMSI, to the Oregon Coast and much more. Join Friendly House staff at our welcoming neighborhood center in NW Portland and let’s go explore together! Scholarships and financial assistance are available for qualifying families. Discount, Billing, and Payment Policies

A $50 non-refundable deposit, per child and per session, is due at the time of registration.  A $50 sibling discount is offered for the second and all subsequent children. Families who complete the scholarship application will not be required to submit payment at registration. They may be contacted later to make a full or partial payment, depending on scholarship eligibility. Click here to download the scholarship application and instructions.

Full payment is due 14 days prior to the start of each session (this excludes families receiving full scholarships). Refunds for canceled reservations will not be provided if a cancellation is made less than 14 days prior to the start of the session.
