For Kids

Friendly House is a place to grow.

Since Friendly House’s founding in 1930, the education and well-being of children have been essential to our mission. Today, we provide a safe place to learn and grow for hundreds of children—toddlers to preteens—each year.

Friendly House Children’s Programs

Preschool

Friendly House Preschool is a safe and encouraging home away from home for children ages 3–5. Your child will enjoy making new friends and preparing for kindergarten through a fun, play-based curriculum. We offer flexible partial day and year-round, full-day classes offered on a sliding fee basis, so every preschool family can be part of our community.

After School

Friendly House After School has been an integral part of the Northwest Portland community for decades. Located two blocks from Chapman Elementary, we offer enriching before- and after-school care for Chapman students, with day camps available during school breaks. A sliding fee scale and a robust scholarship program make our high-quality program accessible to families of all incomes.

Summer Camp

Summer is super fun at Friendly House! In nine weeks of field trips and workshops, our day campers learn and grow in new and exciting ways, from swim lessons, to cooking classes, to hiking trips and picking berries on Sauvie Island. Financial assistance may be available for income-qualified families, and registration is open to all 1st–6th graders throughout Portland and the surrounding area.

Kids have more fun during the holiday season at our yearly Winter Day Camp, filled with all kinds of in-door wonder and learning at places like the Oregon Historical Society, OMSI, Mt. Scott Pool, and Electric Castle’s Wunderland Nickel Arcade. Scholarships may be available for qualifying families.

Spring Break Camp

Kindergarten-5th grade campers will explore some of the Pacific Northwest’s most beautiful habitats, learn about local and international fine art, and frolic at Mt. Scott swimming pool.

Scholarships

All of our children’s programs offer scholarships to low-income families and people experiencing houselessness. Working parents must apply for Employment-Related Day Care assistance prior to receiving assistance from Friendly House. In addition, our sliding fee scale allows everyone to participate, regardless of income. We believe that community belongs to everyone, and we invite you to be part of Friendly House.

Friendly Thoughts

I think what you guys do for families is amazing—not just for low-income families, but for everyone! Thank you so much for everything you do.
