Housing

A 2014 study by the Equal Rights Center found that 48% of LGBT-identified seniors “experienced unfavorable differential treatment in terms of availability of housing, pricing, financial incentives, amenities or application requirements.” Many LGBT older adults are forced to hide their sexual orientation and/or gender identity to avoid mistreatment, harassment and discrimination in senior living environments.

By 2030, there will be an estimated 7 million LGBT older adults reaching retirement.

To support the growing LGBT 60+ community, Friendly House Elder Pride Services has developed a Housing Equality Survey Tool, used to vet and identify LGBT-friendly housing providers in Oregon. In 2015, Elder Pride Services published the nation’s first local consumer guide to finding safe and welcoming housing for LGBT people as they age. The survey is now used as a model for identifying equitable housing for LGBT older adults throughout the country.

If you are an LGBT elder who is interested in being part of our Housing Committee that meets monthly to oversee and implement the housing assessments, or if you would like more information regarding the housing assessment, please contact us for more information.

Friendly Thoughts

As a housing provider, we want to be sure that our housing is open and welcoming to everyone in addition to being reflective of the community as a whole. Fair housing legislation provides parameters for preventing discrimination at the entry level into housing, but our partnership with SAGE [Elder Pride Services] helps us to ensure that we are prioritizing the needs and wants of LGTBQ elders and responding appropriately to issues of bullying or discrimination that may arise. SAGE [Elder Pride Services] allows us to demonstrate our commitment to a safe and dignified housing experience for LGBT elders, furthering our organizational mission and resulting in happier, healthier communities.

Julia Doty, Director of Resident Services, Northwest Housing Alternatives
