Neighborhood Walk to Golden West Hotel

This Slabtown Tour will be to the Golden West Hotel, a landmark of profound significance in Portland’s African American history. The Golden West was one of the few hotels in early 20th-century Portland that welcomed Black travelers and residents, serving as a vibrant hub for the city’s Black community during a time of widespread racial exclusion. Along the way, Tanya will share stories and insights about the neighborhood’s evolving cultural landscape, pointing out sites connected to early immigrant communities, social movements, and local figures who helped shape the area. Please bring water, apply and bring sunscreen, and wear sturdy walking shoes.
10am–12pm • Friday, August 15 • Free
The tour will begin at Friendly House, with stops at The Black Gallery PDX and The Golden West Hotel.
