Working from James Baldwin’s unfinished final novel of the same name, director Raoul Peck creates this part documentary, part-social critique film essay on what it means to be Black in the United States. The film includes Baldwin’s personal account of the civil rights movement and recollections of its leaders Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King Jr., as well as Baldwin’s own personal observations of American history.
