Amy Beach: First Great American Female Composer

Amy Beach, born 1867 was a child prodigy who began composing at age 4 and performing piano concerts at age 6. Beach was the first American composer to achieve success without having studied in Europe and, in 1896, became the first American woman to compose and publish a symphony. Though her music fell into neglect after her death in 1944, it is now receiving favorable attention. This program will explore her fascinating life.
