This program provides an overview of the Underground Railroad with a spotlight on William Still, who helped as many as 800 slaves escape to freedom during the Civil War era. His authoritative account, The Underground Railroad Records (1872), has been integral to the history of these years, as he carefully recorded many details of the workings of the Underground Railroad and kept records of those passing through, aiding in reuniting families after the war.
