Willa Cather is best known for her novels of life on the Great Plains, including O Pioneers!, My Ántonia, and One of Ours, for which she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1923. Early in life, Cather and her family moved from Virginia to Nebraska, settling in the town of Red Cloud. While she moved to New York City as an adult, those early years in the Great Plains haunted her writing and she achieved great recognition as a novelist of the frontier and pioneer experience. This program looks at her writing as well as the importance of her 39-year relationship with Edith Lewis, the woman with whom Cather was able to create her greatest works.
