Book Club: Humanities of Portland Moderated by Tanya Lyn March, PHD

This is a dynamic book club that goes beyond traditional reading. Each month, members select a book to dive into, followed by exciting field trips related to the story’s themes, like visiting local museums or other Portland destinations. Join fellow readers each month to dive into a new book and enjoy creative activities or field trips that connect to the story. It’s a fun, interactive way to experience literature and community together! Activities are held at Friendly House unless otherwise noted. 

JULY BOOK: Timber Beasts by S.L. Stoner
Set in Portland in 1902, this historical mystery follows Sage Adair, a wealthy restaurateur who secretly works on behalf of the labor movement while investigating corruption among the city’s powerful timber and business elites. When a young man is accused of murder, Sage’s search for the truth leads him through logging camps, hobo jungles, and political intrigue in a story inspired by real Pacific Northwest history.

SEPTEMBER BOOK: The Beyond the Ripples by Dede Montgomery
This book is a multigenerational mystery set in the Pacific Northwest, where a message in a bottle found along the Columbia River unexpectedly connects strangers across time and place. As two women unravel the story behind the note, they confront family secrets, past regrets, and the power of human connection and forgiveness.
