Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Our Objective
We strive to create an equitable and inclusive community at Friendly House and beyond that celebrates cultural, economic, and ideological diversity by challenging systems and behaviors that diminish humanity.
Our Vision
Friendly House, a 21st century settlement house, engages people to create a compassionate, equitable and inclusive society.
Our Plans
Our Operating Plan is developed by the DEI Committee each year and sets a goal for the organization with different metrics, such as staff and board diversity. You can view our Operating Plan here soon!
Our commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is also rooted in our Strategic Plan. You can view our Strategic Plan here soon!
Our Accomplishments
Friendly House’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) committee has been hard at work over the last couple of years. In a short time, the committee has made significant accomplishments!
Visibility
We increased visibility of inclusive signage around our three buildings, including gender-neutral bathrooms (as our facility allows).
Hiring
Updated and Improved our hiring policies to remove implicit biases through a “blind hiring process” using the Avarna tool kit. This allows us to diversify our applicant pool and helps recruit members of marginalized communities into our wonderful staff.
Training
Increased our professional development around DEI-related topics for staff and board of directors to better support our ever-changing community.
Surveys
Our demographic surveys have been updated to reflect the beautiful diversity in gender identity our community has to offer.
Programming
We have also added and expanded our programming to include multicultural celebrations, such as our annual Pride Party in June, our Day of the Dead celebration in November, and our Lunar New Year celebration early in our calendar year. All of these celebrations are attended by at least 100 participants; the events include food, entertainment, and an educational component.
