About

Our Mission

Friendly House creates a thriving community by connecting people of all ages and backgrounds through quality educational, recreational and other life-sustaining services.

Our Vision

Friendly House, a 21st century settlement house, engages people to create a compassionate, equitable and inclusive society.

What is a settlement house?

Settlement houses were first established in the late 19th century in poor urban areas with a goal of establishing an interdependent community. Volunteer middle or upper-class settlement workers lived in these houses, hoping to share knowledge and culture while working to alleviate poverty in low-income neighborhoods. One goal of settlement houses was to remain nimble and responsive to the needs of an ever-changing neighborhood—a goal we continue to fulfill to this day.
